Sir Richard Lambert and Dame Julia Cleverdon have been appointed Chair and Vice Chair of the Fair Education Alliance, a coalition made up of leading UK organisations to address the persistent gap in education outcomes between young people from the poorest communities and their wealthier peers.
Sir Richard said: “The correlation in our country between economic deprivation, poor schooling and limited life chances is a national scandal – and one with serious economic and social consequences. This is a challenge that can and must be addressed. The Fair Education Alliance can make a real difference.”
The Alliance is made up of 33 members and supporters, including Teach First, the National Association of Head Teachers, Save the Children, UBS – the founding corporate supporter - and Business in the Community. It was set up last year to find solutions to educational inequality, and will monitor the progress made to narrow the gap on an annual basis.
Russell Hobby, General Secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said: "Sir Richard and Dame Julia are a powerful team at the helm of the Fair Education Alliance - what a great combination to help the Alliance to move into the next phase of its campaigning to end inequality in education.”
The Fair Education Alliance has also appointed Lewis Iwu as its Director. Formerly at the advisory firm, The Brunswick Group, Lewis was a trustee of the education charity Debate Mate, and a President of the Oxford University Student Union.
